Nighttime boat trip ends with drowning

ANCHOR POINT -- An Anchor Point man drowned after the small motorboat he was in with another man sank in a pond early Tuesday, Alaska State Troopers said.

Allen Chapman, 25, was at a party near Mile 2 of the North Fork Road in Anchor Point on Monday night, troopers said. After midnight, he and another man decided to take the boat out to the middle of the pond. The driver of the boat was able to swim to shore when it sank, but Chapman was not. Chapman struggled in the water before he went under, witnesses told troopers.

Those on shore attempted unsuccessfully to rescue Chapman. His body was recovered several hours later by searchers.

Troopers say the investigation into the drowning is continuing.
